This dance began in haiti and Dominican Republic when a military officer was wounded in battle and developed a limp. A celebration dance was given to the great hero returning from the war. Instead of embarrassing their hero (who limped on his wounded leg while dancing), all the men limped as they danced too. Thus the Merengue was born.
