FAQs

What is the difference between American Style (American rhythm & American Smooth) and International Style (International Latin & International Standard)?

American Style dances is only danced in the U.S. Unlike International Style Dances, it is danced both in and out of the U.S. Also, American Style is not as technical as International Style. American Style consists of more “open” steps, steps that are fun and flashy, dancing with flexed knees. International Style is distinctive in that the hip action is achieved after stepping onto a “straight leg.”

What are Roving Dance Hosts?

Roving Dance Hosts are ‘Dance Partners’ that dance with Individuals who don’t have a partner. You are not obligated to tip your Dance Host, but it would be greatly appreciated if you do. If you would like to hire a Dance Host to dance with you for the whole night (usually 4 hours), the prices range from $100 – $300, depending on the chosen Dance Host. Some Dance Hosts charge by the hour.

What do I wear to go out dancing?

The clothing you choose can make a huge difference in how comfortable and presentable you are. Usually you want to dress semi-casual to semi-formal. However, you want to wear something you can “move” in. For women, long skirts or dresses are not usually recommended to dance in because they get stepped on accidentally. To avoid injuries, wear a short skirt or pants.

Why should I buy dance shoes?

There are many stores and websites that sell Ballroom Dance Shoes. Good dance shoes make dancing even more of a pleasure. In class, shoes that let you pivot or spin halfway around on one foot are much better than anything else, because you will be doing a lot of that in the turns you learn. Overall, you want shoes that will let you pivot freely (to avoid knee damage), but not let you slip and fall. So, in general, leather-soled or suede-soled shoes are good.

If you are dancing fairly often, you should treat yourself to some good dance shoes. They’ll set you back about $50-120.

Do I have to bring a dance partner to join your group lessons and social dancing parties?

No. You don’t have to bring a partner for our group lessons or our social dance parties. Usually the teacher will rotate partners so that everyone will get a chance to dance with a partner during the group class. During our social dance parties, there are usually some of our very own students or dance hosts who go around and dance with other people. Though if you really want a dance partner check out DancePartner.com.
